Over-stretched special schools struggling with over-capacity

Data from the Department for Education shows that there are approximately 4,000 more pupils on roll in special schools than reported capacity. This is due to two-thirds of special schools being over-capacity. The government has invested £2.6 billion between 2022-2025 to increase special school and alternative provision capacity, including expansion of existing schools. The promised new special free schools, including the 15 announced in the spring budget, will take time before they are able to offer places.
