Developing Emotional Intelligence:managing Behavioural, Emotional & Social Difficulties

Developing Emotional Intelligence: Strategies for managing Behavioural, Emotional & Social Difficulties in the Classroom

One America Square, 8th October

INTRODUCTION

Behaviour is affected by a range of internal and external forces. This conference will introduce the DFE Inclusion Development Programme materials to support Behavioural, Emotional and Social difficulties (BESD), and aims to identify those forces that can be managed effectively by pupils working alongside teaching staff, and to share strategies to enhance their experience of learning.

Workshop A Rob Long, Educational Psychologist and Author

Rob Long will explore the psychology of emotions in learners, consider ‘at risk’ groups and the value of a ‘team around the child’. Emotions such as sadness, anxiety and depression will be explored and how to develop resilience at a whole school and individual level. Participants will construct a toolbox of techniques for coping with negative feelings and enhancing positive ones.

Workshop B Jean Barlow, Teacher and Trainer

Peer massage is a great resource for the Teacher, Teaching Assistant, or any other children’s or young people’s workforce practitioner. This workshop show how peer massage can improve behaviour and helps to protect and empower children: to speak for themselves; to build positive language skills and assertive scripts that can be used throughout life and develops the sense of rights and responsibilities. Basic peer massage techniques will be shared along with guidance on how to keep the children ‘safe’ during peer massage sessions.

Workshop C Barbara Knowles, Executive Director, SEBDA

Barbara will look at approaches to introducing and developing SEAL at a whole school level and introduce ways that SEAL can sit alongside other initiatives and practices in schools. This is underpinned by an approach which seeks to understand behavior as an essential step in behavior management. This workshop will approach SEAL at a whole school level looking at learning and teaching; classroom level, focusing on the curriculum and climate for learning with the school and, at an individual level, supporting children with SEN.

Workshop D Aqualma Murray, Children’s Mental Health Consultant and Trainer

In this workshop, Aqualma will look at the Types of mental health that children and young people suffer from and introduce delegates to pre-disposing factors from their families, schools and economical settings that impact on young people. We will then explore how mental health in children and young people is manifested in their lives, ie. lack of self esteem, aggressive behaviour and self harming, and discuss what some of the terms children are labelled with, such as conduct disorder and depression in children, really mean. The skills and knowledge that professionals require to work effectively with children at risk of or presenting with mental health issues will also be discussed, including appropriate referrals and multi-agency strategies.

Whole Group Workshop

Come take a SEAT - Social Emotional Aspects of Teaching: A survival toolkit for teachers Anita Devi, Education Consultant, Lecturer and Trainer

In this workshop, Anita will share with delegates, a range of tools and techniques to support the “Social Emotional Aspects of Teaching” (SEAT © Anita Devi 2009). Together participants will explore some of the common stressors for teachers, as well as tried and tested strategies for avoiding, addressing and/or removing stress. The main aim of the workshop is to help practitioners restore the ‘feel good’ factor of what they do, why they do it and how they make a difference to children and young people in their care. Anita will use a human values approach to underpin her ideas and suggested strategies. The session is intended to be reflective, inspirational and fun!
