Poetry Competition 2010
Fifth annual Inclusive Poetry Competition.
Nasen in conjunction with Emap Education are delighted to announce the call for entries for the fifth annual Inclusive Poetry Competition. We are seeking entries from pupils of all ages on the topic of “breaking down barriers”. There will be four categories:
- The Primary Category for Individuals (5-11 years)
- The Primary Category for Groups (5-11 years)
- The Secondary Category for Individuals (12-19 years)
- The Secondary Category for Groups (12-19 years)
This year £1000 worth of Rising Stars resources will be split between the schools of the two overall winners, one from the primary category, one from the secondary category.
A £50 prize and goodie bag will be awarded to the authors of the best three poems in each category. Highly commended pupils will each receive a certificate. A selection of the poems will also be published in an anthology available from nasen.
The competition will give all young people the opportunity to express their feelings on breaking down barriers and how it has affected and enriched their lives within their school, community or the society in which they are growing up.
In nasen’s view breaking down barriers is a theme relevant to all pupils. It might be overcoming a learning difficulty, a physical difficulty, coming to terms with a problem, helping another child or learning a skill that a child thought was beyond their reach; the only limit is the children’s imagination.
This extract from a poem by Louis Armour sums up how barriers can be tackled:
You don’t know what it’s like to be me!
And that’s why I go to Friary
So when I hit the corridor I don’t go for no stroll
Me I get in my wheels and roll man roll
And if they stand in my way I mow them down!
So you’d best show respect when Lewis is around!
The judges will look for poems that:
- are high quality;
- reflect inclusiveness of their school, community or society;
- are imaginative and inventive;
- express emotion and feeling;
- explore the topic of “breaking down barriers”.
Winners from previous years have written poems related to the topic on subjects as diverse as:
Family members, friendship, my life, break time, sport, school feelings and special needs.
Entries will be accepted from September 2009.
