Guidance on reducing the need for restraint and restrictive intervention is published
This guidance is for health and social care services and special education settings, and is aimed at those who work with children and young people with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum conditions and mental health difficulties.
The non-statutory guidance is very clear that restraint and restricitve intervention are traumatising, whilst recognising that there may be times when these approaches are necessary, to keep children and young people, or others, safe. It states that restrictive intervention can never be a long-term solution, and that the government is particularly concerned about long-term or institutionalised uses of restrictive interventions.
It sets out the relevant law and guidance and provides a framework of core values and key principles. The key question should always be: 'What is in the best interests of the child and/or those around them in view of the risks presented?'
There is also ongoing consultation into whether there is a need for further guidance on the use of restraint and restrictive intervention in mainstream schools, mainstream post-16 settings and educational settings offering alternative provision. If you wish to take part, use the link below.

The resource can be used to outline a pupil’s key strengths, needs and the strategies and key adjustments to teaching that are needed every day. It can provide a useful vehicle for meaningful discussion around learning between the teacher and the pupil, involving them positively in discussing effective approaches to enable better engagement.
