In July 2018, Generation CAN hosted their first event, celebrating the remarkable stories of children and young people with SEND and the people who support them. Winners from across Worcestershire were awarded for their progress, resilience and determination, like Jack (pictured) who has SEMH needs and was a school refuser but who has managed to return to school successfully, becoming a prefect; or Georgie (pictured) who, despite cerebral palsy, has undergone major surgery and worked very hard on a range of exercises to learn to walk. Most children came from a mainstream school setting but some were also from specialist or post-16 provisions.
Sponsored by a variety of national and local organisations, the charity will host its county awards again in July 2019 - this year a bigger and better event to continue to improve awareness and recognition for SENDs. Additionally, they are also trialling the Generation CAN Schools’ Awards pack this year with a number of SENCOs nationally in different settings to host their own in-school events to celebrate the children and young people within their own community.
