Adoption UK report reveals the extent of exclusions among adopted children

News - 29 Nov 2017

Adoption UK has published the results of a survey of adoptive parents, which shows that adopted children are 20 times more likely to be permanently excluded from school than their classmates.

Exclusion rates for children with SEND are far higher than for those without SEND, and this survey shows that the rate for adopted children is also much higher; adopted children are over-represented among the SEND cohort, as are looked after children. Nearly a quarter (23%) of adopted children have been temporarily excluded from school, the survey of more than 2,000 responses revealed.
Adoption UK is calling on the government to collect and analyse exclusion and performance statistics for adopted children, as they do for other cohorts.
