£45 million package of support for SEND announced by government

News - 01 Dec 2017

The funding package includes money to support LAs with their implementation of the SEND reforms, to establish local supported internship forums and to support Parent Carer Forums.

Robert Goodwill, the Minister for Children and Families, confirmed that this is additional funding, with the aim of continuing to transform SEN provision and put families at the heart of the system. He wants to ensure that Education Health and Care Plans are tailored to individuals - something which is not yet always the case.

The funding breaks down as:
  • £29 million to support councils and their local partners to continue with the implementation of the SEND reforms based on the Children and Families Act of 2014
  • £9.7 million to establish local supported internship forums, which will create work placements for young people with SEND; this funding could be used to train job coaches to support young people with learning difficulties
  • £4.6 million for Parent Carer Forums
