39 special schools and alternative provision free schools to be opened

News - 15 Mar 2019

The DfE has announced a joint special and alternative provision free school wave.

37 special free schools and 2 alternative provision free schools will create 3,400 new places for children. Local authority specifications will be published on their individual websites.

For those interested in applying, application guidance and criteria can be found on the DfE's website here along with a list of approved local authority bids. The deadline to submit an application to the DfE is the 30th of September 2019.

New Schools Network (NSN) will be offering free advice, guidance and support to anyone interested in opening a free school as part of this wave. NSN’s Development Programme offers a bespoke package of support to help applicants write a strong proposal to submit to the DfE. For those who would like to find out more about the free schools process and how to apply NSN offer 1:1 meetings with advisers.

This announcement is welcomed by nasen and we look forward to further developments in this area.
