Proportion of statements and EHCPs in special schools over time
Last week, nasen’s Chief Executive, Dr Adam Boddison informed the Westminster Education Forum that the proportion of children and young people with statements or EHCPs that attend maintained and non-maintained special schools has increased from 38% in 2007 to 45% in 2017.
During the period 2010 to 2017, the total number of maintained and non-maintained special schools has reduced by 17, from 1054 to 1037. This gives rise to a key question: what proportion of children and young people with EHCPs should we expect to attend a special school to have their needs met? Since this data was shared, there have been a number of questions about the data itself, so the original source of the data and the subsequent calculations are shared here for reference.
