Ofsted Annual Report released

News - 18 Dec 2017

'Ofsted Annual Report 2016/17: education, children’s services and skills' mentions SEND as an area for focus across the next year.

The Annual Report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills 2016/17 highlights that children and young people identified as needing SEND (special educational needs and disability) support but who do not have an education, health and care plan often have a much poorer experience of the education system than their peers. In the local authorities Ofsted inspected, leaders were not clear how their actions were improving outcomes for these children and young people.

The report looks at SEND in more detail and says:
  •  Many children who have SEND present very challenging behaviour. These children and young people can be particularly vulnerable to underachievement. The underlying causes of poor behaviour in children are not always evident, and therefore there is always a risk of misidentification.
  • The number of pupils who have SEND and are excluded is typically high and there is also poor attendance within this group.
As a result, over the coming year Ofsted will be undertaking research into the needs and context of children whose behaviour is very challenging for the people around them.
