Latest SEND Data

The latest statistics on SEND were released on Thursday 26th July by the DfE. The information is based on the January school census data.

While last year’s data showed an increase in the numbers of pupils with SEND, the first since 2010, the percentage remained consistent at 14.4%. The figures in this latest release however show not only an increase in numbers (up from 1,244,215 in January 2017 to 1,276,215 for January this year) but also in the percentage. The current percentage of pupils identified with SEN stands at 14.6%, a 0.2% increase.

In terms of the breakdown of the above numbers, the percentage of pupils on SEN Support has increased by 0.1% to 11.7% of the total pupil population, from 11.6% last year. Similarly, having been stable for a number of years, there has been an increase in the percentage of those with an EHC plan, from 2.8% in 2017 to 2.9% in January this year.

The most common types of primary need have stayed the same. For those on SEN Support, the primary type of need is still Moderate Learning Difficulty (although there has been an increase in the percentage of those with SLCN (0.8%)).

For those pupils with an EHC plan, ASD remains the most common type of need with an increase from 2017 of 1.3% to 28.2%.

Amongst the further information in the release are figures relating to type of setting. The percentage of pupils with an EHC plan (or statement) attending state funded special provision has risen by 6% from 2010, and in January stood at 44.2%. What is perhaps surprising is that the percentage of those pupils with an EHC plan attending state funded secondary schools has decreased since 2010 by 7.9% to 20.9%. This is also reflected for those pupils on SEN Support at secondary; the percentage of these pupils has decreased by 9.7% since 2010 and in January stood at 33.9%.
