career opportunities

I am interested in finding out more about a career in SEN / job opportunities.

Nasen as an organisation does not employ teachers, support assistants or other professionals in SEN, though we do provide support for the work they do.

We would usually advise anyone interested in becoming a special needs teacher to obtain a teaching qualification and, spend some time teaching before investigating the area of special needs.

It would be advisable to try to obtain some voluntary experience in a local school or care unit before considering this as a career, to allow you to get an idea of the work involved.

It is possible for Graduates to add a year to their main teaching qualification to obtain the special needs focus and you would need to contact Universities to find out which offer this option.

Alternatively, you might like to contact the Teacher Development Agency for Schools (TDA) at 151 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 9SZ or by visiting http://www.tda.gov.uk/; or the The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) at www.dfes.gov.uk (tel 0207 925 5000).

I hope you are able to find the support you need. Nasen was created to support those who support children with special needs and as such, I hope you can find the time browse through our website further to find out the benefits of becoming a member of nasen. We are always looking for new enthusiastic members who can share their knowledge and experiences with others.

With regard to training and the pursuit of a career in SEN I would suggest you contact and the Teacher Development Agency (TDA), , www.tda.gov.uk/ ,who should be able to give an overview of current qualification requirements. You could also contact schools of education attached to Universities for more detailed information about courses.
