Overlapping ADHD, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Dyslexia & Dyspraxia: Effect, Influences & New Developments

Thistle Hotel Middlesbrough Fry Street, MIDDLESBROUGH Cleveland, TS1 1JH - 30th April 2010

INTRODUCTION

Overlapping or co-existing ADHD, autism (ASD), asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia (DCD) refers to a wider range of additional difficulties not all directly related to the core presentation.

This is an area of growing interest because it calls into question the boundaries of each difficulty and the support they require. The elevated risk to the education of the student with any one of these difficulties requires a greater understanding of them all. This nasen conference has been designed to highlight the overlap between difficulties and to develop skills to support students.

KEYNOTE PROFILES

Keynote 1: Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD). Is co-occurrence the rule rather than the exception? Dr Madeleine Portwood, Specialist Senior Educational Psychologist, Hon. Fellow University of Durham.

Fintan O’Regan
Individuals with ADHD will most usually have one or more other conditions which could include ASD, CD, G&T,

of learning, behavioural and socialisation targets.

Workshop C Identifying and addressing the needs of a child with autism or Asperger syndrome 24/7

Dr Glenys Jones, Autism Centre for Education and Research
Autism and Asperger syndrome affect many areas of a child’s life throughout the 24 hour day, at home and

The session will provide an understanding of dyslexia and the areas of co-occurrence with other
developmental disorders. It will also consider strategies to support children and young people who have
